books in conversation
Because sometimes one book starts the conversation, but two books deepen it.
Two books. One question.
Books in Conversation isn't a traditional book club. It’s a reading circle pairing fiction and nonfiction around a shared question.
Instead of reading one book at a time, each pairing brings together two books that approach the same question from different angles—typically one fiction and one nonfiction.
Together, they create a richer conversation about life, identity, relationships, work, creativity, grief, belonging, and what it means to be human. We don't just ask, “What did you think of the book?”
We ask: What does this book help us see? And what changes when we put it beside another?
this season
We only get one life, so how should we spend it?
Four Thousand Weeks reminds us that our time is finite and that meaning comes from choosing what matters. The Midnight Library explores the fantasy of alternate lives and the regrets that keep us looking backward. Together, these books offer a compelling invitation: stop chasing the life that might have been and start engaging more fully with the life that is.
September → October
One pairing. Two months. Two books.
NOVEMBER / DECEMBER ‘26
theme: Living Authentically in the Shadow of Death
A memoir from a death doula paired with a mythological fantasy about the Mayan god of death. Together, these books explore how mortality can become a teacher rather than something to fear. One offers practical wisdom from real encounters with death; the other uses myth and storytelling to examine transformation, identity, and what it means to choose your own path.
JANUARY / FEBRUARY ‘27
theme: Learning to Live Between Versions of Yourself
Wintering argues that life contains seasons of retreat, uncertainty, loss, and transformation that cannot be rushed. Piranesi is about a man living in a mysterious world whose understanding of reality slowly changes as he uncovers the truth about himself and his past. How do we navigate the strange middle ground between an ending and a beginning? What do we do when the old self no longer fits?
MARCH / APRIL ‘27
theme: Who Are You Without Your Work?
A nonfiction examination of work's outsized role in modern identity paired with a novel about loneliness, healing, and rebuilding a life outside of performance. Together, these books explore what remains when productivity and achievement are no longer enough.
Summer is for wandering.
From May through August, Books in Conversation takes a seasonal pause.
Instead of assigning our regular pairings, we open things up for summer reading challenges and other community book clubs—giving everyone room to follow whatever books happen to spark their curiosity.
